Our founder spent the better part of a year watching small red bumps spread around her mouth, scaly and stubborn, and doing what anyone would do: trying more. A richer moisturizer. Acne products. Actives. Then a hydrocortisone cream that worked for a few wonderful days and then flared worse than ever.
She felt like her own skincare had turned against her, and like she had somehow broken her face. Then she learned two things that changed everything.
First, it had a name — perioral dermatitis — a common, barrier-driven condition that is constantly misdiagnosed, even by doctors. Second, and this is the cruel part: with this condition, doing more is what keeps it going.
The damaged barrier lets products penetrate and irritate, the dryness makes you reach for more, and steroid creams help then flare. She had been feeding the very thing she was fighting.
